Mod Revival

mods1_h.jpg
Ask five different people what a mod is and you'll probably get five different answers, covering maybe five different decades. So here, basically, is what you need to know: "Modernists" started getting their kicks in the late 1950s from free jazz, existentialism, and coffeehouses; and as the movement made its way through a bunch of revivals over the next half-century, the scene latched onto Italian art-house films, Fred Perry shirts, Clarks desert boots, The Who, The Jam, scooters, ska, and speed. Which means that this new book by German photographer Horst A. Friedrichs has plenty of style to spare. In I'm One: 21st Century Mods, Friedrichs set himself the task of chronicling mod's lineage in and around London. Here, some of our favorite shots.
